Clarion County

Clarion, the county seat, is a borough in Clarion County about 100 miles north-northeast of Pittsburgh. Clarion was settled in 1839 and incorporated in 1841. In the past, the surrounding area produced natural gas, oil, lumber and coal. The Clarion University of Pennsylvania is located here.

Named for the nearby Clarion River, which was itself named for the water's loud, clear sound. The town plays host to an annual Autumn Leaf Festival, which celebrates the transient beauty of fall. With the 6,000-acre Cook Forest Park fronting eight miles of the river, Clarion is an ideal destination for campers, hikers, and anybody else who loves trees. In fact, Cook Forest Park contains the largest stand of virgin white pine east of the Mississippi. Walking tours offer visitors a look at the varied architectural styles of the historic downtown. Don’t miss Kittanning State Forest, a great place for active outdoorsy types! Bike, hike, fish, camp, or cross-country ski through some of the prettiest land in the Pennsylvania Wilds – trails galore.

Foxburg is located along the banks of the scenic Allegheny River, Best known for the Foxburg Golf Course, the oldest course in continuous use in the country and the American Golf Hall of Fame. Relax to the sounds of the soothing waterfall or watching the Allegheny River slowly pass from the deck of the Foxburg Inn. Visit the historic Caboose Tourist and Information Center located downtown.
