Clinton County

Lock Haven, the county seat, is a city in Clinton County located in northern Pennsylvania 24 miles southwest of Williamsport. The Lock Haven University is located here.

Established in 1833, the city’s importance and name grew out of it’s location along the West Branch Susquehanna River and the many canal ‘locks’ for the Pennsylvania and Bald Eagle Canals. The city was known as a ‘haven’ of rest for the raftsmen floating timber to sawmills. The Heisey Museum on Water Street is the place to visit to learn and see what life was like during the 1800’s in Lock Haven. Lock Haven is also home to the Piper Aviation Museum that celebrates the history of William Piper and his Piper Cubs, known as the ‘plane that taught the world to fly’. Today the ‘Haven’ is a small college town with an active downtown that welcomes visitors and their popular summer concerts on the river.

Loganton is located in the heart of Sugar Valley and is an Amish farming community. Shop the general store and local craftsmen shops- still only lit with gas lights. Nearby is the Logan Mills Covered Bridge and Bull Run One Room School, part of the Sugar Valley Historical Society.

Mill Hall was once a village with many mills powered by Fishing and Bald Eagle Creeks, today it has become a retail center with a Super Wal-Mart, Super K-Mart, Lowe’s and many restaurants. Mill Hall is also home to Millbrook Playhouse, one of the few remaining converted ‘Barn Theatres’ offering professional summer stock shows. The highly rated Clinton County Club Golf Course offers 18 holes next to picturesque Bald Eagle Creek.

Renovo, named in 1863, comes from the Latin meaning ‘to renovate’ or ‘to make new.’  A railroad from Sunbury to Erie was put under contract and in 1862, the first whistle of the locomotive was heard entering Renovo. The P. & E. R. R. Co concluded to locate their machine shops to repair and refurbish locomotives, at the Renovo Railroad Yards.  Today, Renovo is at the hub of many outdoor recreational opportunities. Renovo is the intersection of two scenic byways, nearby Hyner Run, Hyner View and Kettle Creek State Park are popular for all types of recreation. Located along the West Branch Susquehanna River and surrounded by more than 300,000 acres of the Sproul State Forest, hunting, fishing and hiking are a way of life here.

Woolrich is wherein 1830 John Rich built his woolen mill and began selling to lumber camps from a mule cart. Today, Woolrich is an internationally respected company selling quality fabrics, active outdoor clothing and home furnishing. The Woolrich Original Factory Outlet Store is located in the Woolrich Community Park and satisfies hundreds of thousands shoppers each year. Famous for their signature red and black plaid fabric- matching pants, coat and hat were so popular it became known as the ‘Pennsylvania Tuxedo’.
