Facts
Beautiful, unique, charming—these are qualitative words that describe the Pennsylvania Wilds. But all you statisticians out there should know that the Pennsylvania Wilds are quantifiably fabulous, too!
State Parks - 29 state parks on more than 27,600 acres offer a wide variety of recreational activities.
State Forests - 8 state forest districts with more than 1.3 million acres of public forestland offer a variety of recreational activities.
Allegheny National Forest (ANF) - 513,000 acres of forestland located in the northwestern Pennsylvania counties of Elk, Forest, McKean, and Warren offer a variety of motorized and nonmotorized recreational activities.
Game Lands – More than 300,000 acres are managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for hunters and wildlife.
Water Resources – More than 16,000 miles of flowing water, including stocked trout streams, wild trout streams, designated wilderness trout streams, lakes, reservoirs, boat launches, and impoundments, are managed by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. Three distinct water trails covering more than 400 miles include the West Branch Susquehanna River Water Trail (240 miles), the Clarion River Water Trail (100 miles), and the Middle Allegheny River Water Trail (85 miles).
Wild and Natural Areas – More than 150,000 acres include 8 wild areas and 27 natural areas, so named because of their significant scenic, historic, geologic, and ecological value.
